5 Must See Beaches in Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura is one of eight islands that belong to the Canary Islands of Spain. Located off the northwestern coast of Africa, Fuerteventura has over 180 miles of coastline and is known to have the best white sand beaches of all the islands. If you’re a beach lover, this is great news! And in this blog, I will be breaking down 5 must see beaches on the island.

Costa Calma

Costa Calma is a resort town and large beach most frequently visited by families. The water in this area is every shade of blue and is easily enjoyable thanks to the shallow depth that lasts forever. My recommendation would be to park on a street labeled C. L.T.U, between SBH Taro Beach hotel and Sotavento Beach Club hotel, and walk down the wooden stairs to this area of the beach. To the left the beach will be clearly visible from the stairs, or you can go right and around some rocks and find more beach on that side. Both are great places to spend the day.

Playa de la Cebada

This sweet, little beach is located in the town of Morro Jable on the southernmost edge of the island. The ocean is calm, the sand is soft, and there’s an ice cream shop nearby! This beach is connected to a string of beaches, a lot of which are larger, but on Playa de la Cebada, you can see the raw edge of the island meet the water and the rocks that have been swept underneath the tide. The contrast somehow makes the water look even more blue and beautiful and that is what makes this beach special. There is also a beautiful lookout point situated right on top of the cliff!

Parque Natural de Jandía

Parque Natural de Jandía is a nature reserve that covers a very large portion of the southern tip of Fuerteventura, also known as the Jandía Peninsula. This is where you will find your off the beaten path beaches and have the highest likelihood of scoring a private beach for the day. A local recommended a specific beach in this reserve called Playa de La Señora, which can be found on Google Maps. Having this location (although not fully accurate) was very helpful, and from that point on, tiny roads leading down to the beaches themselves can be spotted. From there, pick one that gives you a good feeling and embark on your adventure!

Playa de Sotavento

This beach is a well-known attraction in Fuerteventura due to the vast lagoons that are formed during high tide which create the illusion of sandbars way off the coast. It is a truly unique sight and a very fun place to go for a swim and a long walk on the beach. Another popular activity in this area is windsurfing! So, whether you prefer to take a laid-back dip or try your hand at a new sport, there’s something here for you.

Playa El Cofete

Cofete lies on the western side of the island making its landscape and ocean much different from the other beaches I’ve mentioned. The view from above is enough to make the journey worth it. The mountains quite literally meet the sea as they slope down and rocks disintegrate into sand and sand becomes surf. There is no better way to describe Cofete than otherworldly.

Thanks for reading and let beach season commence!
